ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -Buffalo backup linebacker John DiGiorgio hurt his right knee in Buffalo’s 23-14 win over San Diego on Sunday, adding to the growing number of injuries that are suddenly beginning to mount on the AFC East-leading Bills.
DiGiorgio, a special teams standout, was injured on a punt return late in the second quarter. He was carted off the field, unable to put any weight on his right leg.
Coach Dick Jauron said he’ll know more about DiGiorgio’s status on Monday, but wasn’t “overly optimistic.”
DiGiorgio was spotted after the game using crutches in order to walk.
Starting right guard Brad Butler strained his left knee early on and returned briefly, but ultimately was unable to finish. Starting right tackle Jason Peters also missed some time after hurting his right leg early in the second quarter on a pass play.
Backup Jason Whittle replaced Butler, while Duke Preston played in place of starting center Melvin Fowler (elbow), who missed his first game of the season after not practicing on Thursday or Friday.
ded quarterback Trent Edwards plenty of time to complete 25 of his 30 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown.
“It shows we have a lot of depth,” Preston said. “They didn’t touch Trent all day. You have to have guys that can do multiple things and that is what we are trying to prove.”
The Bills (5-1) were also down two other starters, as defensive end Aaron Schobel (left foot) and cornerback Terrence McGee (left knee sprain) missed the Chargers game.
Schobel, who wore a protective boot all week to help stabilize a ligament and bone injury, missed the first game of his career, snapping a string of 117 straight appearances since he entered the league in 2001. He had his string of consecutive starts stopped at 112.
McGee missed his second straight game after hurting his knee in a Week 4 win at St. Louis.
