RENTON, Wash. (AP) -Walter Jones is saying goodbye to the NFL after 13 seasons.
The Seahawks’ four-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle laughed nervously and struggled with his emotions Friday as he discussed his retirement following two knee surgeries. Jones is 36 years old.
Mike Holmgren calls Jones the best offensive player he’s ever coached. Jones sat alone on a stage at team headquarters and said it was tough, but he’s ready for retirement.
He hasn’t played since Thanksgiving Day 2008 and realized he can’t go out and play at the standard he set for himself.
His No. 71 jersey will be retired by the Seahawks. And Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire declared Friday as Walter Jones Day.
