MOVING IN ADVANCE FOR WEEKEND OF AUG. 23-24
BC-FBN–NFL 2008
NEW YORK – Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady.
As it often is, this NFL season starts on the field as a tale of superstar quarterbacks – one back from retirement in new digs, the other two nursing injuries that may hinder their effectiveness, especially early.
But there are off-field clouds for the NFL as it starts the 2008 season. Among them: an impending labor problem and the possible departure of perhaps its most influential owner in a family disagreement that accentuates the gap between multibillionaires owners and the less rich.

BC-FBN–PATRIOTS TRY AGAIN
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Don’t ask the New England Patriots about 2007: the first 16-0 regular season and the stunning loss to the Giants in the Super Bowl that cost them perfection. Don’t ask them about Spygate. Ask them only about now – today’s practice, this week’s game. That’s been the Patriot way under Bill Belichick. Why should one loss change that, even if came on the game’s biggest stage? By Football Writer Dave Goldberg
FBN–PARCELLS’ LATEST PROJECT
DAVIE, Fla. – Bill Parcells’ job title on his latest reclamation project isn’t coach. But the imprint of the Miami Dolphins’ new executive vice president for football operations is unmistakable. With a hand-picked staff and roster, Parcells looks to turn around a proud franchise that lurched to 1-15 last season. By Rachel Cohen.
FBN–FIXING THE FALCONS
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – It’s hard to find any upside to what happened to the Atlanta Falcons last year, when their star quarterback landed in prison and their coach abandoned them during the season. But that backdrop does provide their new management team with the freedom to build the franchise from scratch as they see fit. By Rachel Cohen.
FBN–BUSH’S BURDEN
NFL career, Bush intends to get people talking about his excellence on the football field again, rather than his failure to live up the lofty expectations placed on him since he won the 2005 Heisman Trophy. By Brett Martel. AP Photos.
BC-FBN–SHANAHAN’S SEASON
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Mike Shanahan has made it for a quarter century in the NFL by constantly making changes to keep the game from passing him by. This offseason was filled with more revisions than usual, from the front office shake-up to the roster retooling to the coaching staff makeover, all in response to the Denver Broncos’ second straight losing season and the team’s first losing record since 1999.
