Panthers releasing Williams
CHARLOTTE, NC (TheSpread) – In an interesting move, the Carolina Panthers have elected to part ways with their franchise leader in rushing, releasing DeAngelo Williams.
The 9-year running back announced on a Charlotte television station that the team was releasing him. He is the franchise leader in rushes (1,432), rushing yards (6,846) and rushing touchdowns (46). The move to release Williams will allowing Carolina to save $2 million in cap space. Williams had one year left on his deal. He rushed for just 219 yards last season, but he has spent his career with Carolina.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the Carolina Panthers are currently a 40/1 longshot to win Super Bowl 50 next season. The Seattle Seahawks are favored to win the Super Bowl with 11/2 odds, while the New England Patriots have 6/1 odds.
Carolina is coming off an interesting season where it went 7-8-1, but still won the NFC South by ½ a game. The Panthers then defeated the Arizona Cardinals in the opening round of the playoffs before coming up short against the Seattle Seahawks in the divisional round. The Panthers have appeared in one Super Bowl, but came up short against the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
