Jets vs. Dolphins Pick
The Sunday Night Football game offers an outstanding matchup, as the Miami Dolphins host their AFC East Division rivals the New York Jets. Let’s preview the matchup and make a prediction for this contest.
Before we had out a pick for this game, let’s first take a look at the odds.
Oddsmakers from online sports book BroburySports.com have made the Dolphins 1.5-point favorites over the Jets in Week 3. The over/under total for this game has been set at 35.5 points.
When making a pick for this game, the one thing that stands out to me is the yards gained per pass statistic. Why? Because the team that throws for more yards per pass usually wins.
Mark Sanchez and the Jets surprisingly threw for more yards per pass against the Patriots in Week 2 and they covered easily. In Week 1 against the Ravens, Sanchez was brutal and while the defense kept the Jets in the game, the passing game failed them in the end when Sanchez couldn’t lead the offense down the field.
Granted, Miami doesn’t have a great passing game but the Dolphins did average 7.1 yards per pass attempt in a win over the Vikings last week, which is nothing to sneeze at. With Darrelle Revis expected to miss the game due to a hamstring injury, my prediction for this game was made for me.
Picks & Predictions:
My prediction is that the Dolphins will throw for more yards per pass than the Jets will, meaning they should win the game barring turnovers. If this prediction holds up, then laying 1.5 points is nothing – especially when you consider home field advantage is usually worth 3 points alone. Now, the yards-per-pass model isn’t perfect and obviously teams win by throwing for less yardage per pass every week in the NFL, but when you consider Revis is out and Miami’s defense has played outstanding, the Dolphins have a great chance of winning and covering.
