Will the Rams trade Bradford?
ST. LOUIS, MO (The Spread) – Could the Rams be on the verge of trading quarterback Sam Bradford to the Vikings?
According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the Rams and Vikings have discussed a potential trade that would send Bradford to Minnesota.
“There are people in the league who believe there have been discussions with the Vikings,” said La Canfora before continuing by stating that, “Rams people have denied any conversations whatsoever.”
The rumor has some legs considering that St. Louis has been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel in this week’s draft. The Rams have two selections in the first round and if Manziel is still on the board at No. 13 overall, then he could be their target. According to MMQB’s Peter King, the Rams recently sent a contingent that included head coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to A&M to work out Manziel, who reportedly impressed them.
But one of the problems with this scenario is that a) Bradford is coming off ACL surgery, B) is set to make $14.015 million in 2014 and $12.985 million in 2015 and C) Manziel doesn’t really fit what the Rams want to do offensively. A year ago they had Bradford in the spread before moving back to a more ball-control offense with running back Zac Stacy as the focal point. And that happened before Bradford was hurt in Carolina and lost for the year due to an ACL tear.
Another factor to consider is whether or not Manziel is even available at No. 13 and whether or not the Rams are just trying to drum up pre-draft interesting in Manziel so that somebody will want to trade up to No. 2. In two years, Fisher and Snead have never used their original draft pick to select a player. They’ve always traded out (either back or forward), which has happened three times now.
Thankfully the draft is this week so the months of speculation will finally stop.
