Analysts rip apart Manziel’s game
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – From Ron Jaworski to Barry Switzer to Greg Cosell, there have been plenty of NFL draft analysts that have ripped apart Johnny Manziel’s game this week.
The brutal evaluation of Manziel started earlier this week when ESPN’s Jaworski said that he wouldn’t draft the Texas A&M quarterback “in the first three rounds.”
“I’m not crazy about him, to be honest with you,” Jaws said of Manziel, who could go as high as No. 1 to the Houston Texans. “I’ve only looked at five games. I wouldn’t take him in the first three rounds. That’s my opinion. It’s incomplete right now. But he has not done a whole lot to me.”
Jaworski added that Manziel “won’t last three games” in the NFL playing the way he did in college.
“He’s a random quarterback who likes to get out of the pocket and make plays with his legs,” Jaws said. “In the NFL, he won’t last three games playing that style. He’ll get hurt. He took a lot of vicious hits at A&M in the last two years.”
Cosell, who has extensive experience scouting prospects and who currently works for NFL Films, supported Jaws’ comments over the weekend.
“I think it’s very hard in the NFL to live on the edge when you don’t need to. If you live on the edge too often, you will fall off the cliff, in my view, in the NFL.”
Making matters worse for Manziel was the fact that former Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer attacked the quarterback’s attitude in a radio interview this week.
“I’m gonna tell you. I said Johnny Manziel is … I don’t like his antics. I think he’s an arrogant little prick,” Switzer said. “I’ve said that and I’ll say it again. He’s a privileged kid, he’s embarrassed himself, he’s embarrassed his teammates, his program. He’s embarrassed his coach. And they’ll all have to defend him because they have to coach. I know that. I spent 40 years in the damn game so I know how it works.”
Talent evaluators and media analysts are proven wrong on a daily basis but Jaworski and Cosell are backed by years of experience. Chances are current NFL scouts have seen the same things in Manziel’s tape as what Jaws and Cosell have seen and will adjust their draft boards accordingly. But that doesn’t mean that Manziel will slip out of the first round, or even out of the top 10 come May. All it takes is one team to fall in love with him – not 32 teams.
