Does the hiring of Chip Kelly improve the 49ers’ Super Bowl LI odds?

The 49ers made the decision to hire Kelly, 52, official on Thursday after he was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles with one week left in the 2015 season. Kelly was 26-21 in his three years with the Eagles, going 10-6 in his first two years before going just 6-9 in 2015 before being fired.

Despite his struggles this year, the hiring of Kelly has immediately boosted the odds for the 49ers to win a championship next season. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the 49ers started the day with 75/1 odds to win Super Bowl LI next season, but they have since jumped up to 50/1 to win.

The 49ers are coming off a 5-11 2015 season under first-year coach Jim Tomsula. The team decided to part ways with him after just one year. San Francisco ranked 31st in the NFL in total offense (303.8 ypg) and 29th in total defense (387.4). Kelly should help improve the offense, but it has yet to be seen if he can build a tremendous defense. One question for Kelly will be if he elects to go with Colin Kaepernick as his QB. He really struggled under Tomsula, throwing just 6 touchdowns with 5 interceptions in nine games before getting injured. For his career, he has 56 touchdown passes to just 26 interceptions. He also has 11 touchdown runs on 1,832 yards.
