Super Bowl Notes:
This will be the second time that the University of Phoenix Stadium will host the Super Bowl. The first appearance was in 2008 when the New York Giants defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots 17-14 as a double-digit underdog. Eli Manning was the MVP of that game and the matchup featured future Hall of Famer Michael Straham of the Giants.
Super Bowl History:
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys have appeared in the most Super Bowls at eight apiece. The Steelers won six of those games while losing twice, while the Cowboys won five times and lost the other three appearances. The Patriots are 3-4 in Super Bowls, while the Broncos are 2-5 after losing 43-8 to the Seahawks in last year’s Super Bowl. Denver was a 2-point favorite at kickoff of that game.
Super Bowl MVP History:
The Cowboys have had the most Super Bowl MVP winners with seven, followed by the Steelers at six. The 49ers have had five Super Bowl MVP winners while the Packers and Giants have had four apiece. Quarterbacks have run away with the Super Bowl MVP with 26, while running backs have won seven times and wide receivers have won six. Linebackers have only won three times, but Seattle’s Malcolm Smith won the award last year in the Seahawks’ win over the Broncos. Deion Branch (XXXIX) and Hines Ward (XL) were the last two non-quarterbacks to win the MVP in back-to-back Super Bowls.
