MINNEAPOLIS, MN (The Spread) – The New England Patriots look to get their first win on Sunday when they hit the road to face the Minnesota Vikings at 1PM ET on CBS.
The Patriots opened the season with a 33-20 loss at Miami despite being a 3.5-point favorite. Minnesota had an impressive showing, beating St. Louis on the road, 34-6, despite being a 3-point underdog. The Patriots have won their last three meetings with the Vikings.
Trends show that the Patriots are 1-7 against the spread in their last 8 road games while Minnesota has covered the spread in four straight home games and in six of their last seven overall.
According to oddsmakers from BetDSI, New England is again a road favorite, as the Patriots have odds of -3 points at Minnesota. The over/under total for the game has been set at 48.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had the Patriots favored by 3.5 points. The spread hit a low of 2.5 before moving up to 3. The over/under total opened at 49 points and held there all week before a late change to 48.5.
The Patriots held a 10-point lead on Miami heading into halftime, but couldn’t close out the game in the second half. The Patriots finished with just 315 yards of offense and only 89 rushing yards while giving up 191 yards on the ground to the Dolphins. Tom Brady threw for 249 yards on 29 of 56 passing with one touchdown. Rob Gronkowski looked good in his debut, catching four passes for 40 yards and a touchdown while Julian Edelman had six catches for 95 yards. Jerod Mayo tallied 12 tackles and a sack to lead the defense.
Not many teams had a better outing than the Vikings last week, dominating St. Louis on the road. Minnesota didn’t have a ton of offense, racking up just 345 total yards, but the defense held St. Louis to 318 yards while forcing two turnovers and getting five sacks. Matt Cassel had 170 yards passing with two touchdowns while receiver Cordarrelle Patterson rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. The defense was led by Everson Griffen, who had two sacks.
In terms of Injuries, New England defensive lineman Michael Buchanan is questionable with an ankle injury. Minnesota linebackers Brandon Watts (knee) and Michael Mauti (foot) are also questionable.
