Packers at Seahawks Odds
SEATTLE, WA (The Spread) – The 2014 NFL Season officially kicks off tonight at 8:30PM ET when the Seattle Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers on NBC.
Seattle is the defending Super Bowl champion after going 13-3 in the 2013 season. Green Bay went 8-7-1 last year, but played a sizable part of the season without quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The home team has won seven of the last eight between these two teams.
Trends show that the Packers are 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 games in September, but 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games. Seattle is 20-7 ATS in its last 27 conference games and 4-0 ATS in its last four games in September.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Seattle is favored at home, as the Seahawks are getting odds of -6 points against the Packers. The over/under total has been set at 47 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had Seattle favored by 5 points. The spread was never lower than that and slowly worked up to 6 points. The over/under total opened at a low of 45.5 points. The total hit a peak of 47.5 before dipping back to 47.
It would be hard to imagine Seattle’s defense getting much better than it was last year. The Seahawks allowed just 273 total yards per game and were tops in the NFL is pass defense. The unit also racked up 44 sacks with 28 interceptions and 20 forced fumbles. Offensively, the team should continue to get better. Russell Wilson had a strong preseason and is improving into his third year at quarterback. The team still has workhorse running back Marshawn Lynch and it anticipates having Percy Harvin for the season, which adds a new dimension to the offense.
Green Bay will have one of the best offenses in the league this season, assuming Rodgers isn’t injured, as he was for most of last year. The offense continues to have plenty of threats at receiver, led by Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. The team also has an established running game behind second-year back Eddie Lacy. Defensively, Green Bay gave up 372 yards per game last year, which needs to improve. The team added Julius Peppers at defensive end to improve the pass rush. The unit also still has linebackers A.J. Hawk and Clay Matthews leading the way.
In terms of Injuries, Green Bay linebacker Brad Jones (quad) is probable to play while defensive tackle B.J. Raji (bicep) was put on the IR. Seattle defensive end Bruce Irvin (hip) is questionable while safety Kam Chancellor (hip) is probable to play.
The Public Bets for this game are currently backing the Packers, as Green Bay is getting 52% of the wagers with point spread odds of +6 at Seattle tonight.
