DETROIT, MI (The Spread) – Jim Caldwell debuts as head coach of the Detroit Lions tonight when they host the New York Giants at 7:10PM ET on ESPN.
Detroit was 7-9 last season, missing out on the NFC North title, which prompted the coaching change. The Giants are coming off a 7-9 season as well in 2013. The Giants have won five of their last six against the Lions.

According to oddsmakers from BetDSI, Detroit is the clear favorite at home, as the Lions are getting odds of -6.5 points against the Giants. The over/under total for the game has been set at 47 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had Detroit favored by 4 points. The spread hit a low of 3.5 before climbing to a peak of 7. It has since settled in at 6.5 points. The over/under total opened at 45.5 points. It hit a peak of 50 points for a short time before dipping back to 47.
The Lions missed out on a potential division title last year, but this year’s team has plenty of talent, especially on offense. Matthew Stafford threw for 4,650 yards last year, with 1,492 of those yards going to Calvin Johnson. The team also has a pair of capable backs in Reggie Bush and Joique Bell while signing Golden Tate in the offseason. Defensively, the Lions have some questions. The secondary is young and lacking and the linebackers are unproven. One key to the unit may be Ndamukong Suh, who is in a contract year.
The Giants were a mess last year, especially when it came to turnovers. Eli Manning had the worst season of his career, throwing 27 interceptions to 18 touchdowns. As a team, they also lost seven fumbles. In the offseason, David Wilson was forced to retire because of injuries despite having played just a few years. The team also lost Hakeem Nicks at receiver and longtime defensive lineman Justin Tuck. However, the Giants haven’t missed the playoffs three straight seasons since 1994-96.
In terms of Injuries, Detroit safety Don Carey (hamstring) is questionable for the game while safety James Ihedigbo (knee) is probable. New York receiver Odell Beckhman (hamstring) and defensive tackle Markus Kuhn (ankle) are both questionable.
