Chargers vs. Cardinals Odds
GLENDALE, AZ (The Spread) – The opening week of the NFL season concludes tonight when the Arizona Cardinals host the San Diego Chargers at 10:20PM ET on ESPN.
San Diego went 9-7 last season, earning a wild card playoff spot. The Chargers reached the second round of the playoffs. Arizona went 10-6 in 2013, just missing out on a playoff bid. San Diego has won it last three meetings with the Cardinals.
Trends show that the road team has covered the spread in five of the last six between these two. San Diego has covered the spread in four straight on the road while Arizona has failed to cover in its last four games on Monday nights.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Arizona is the slight favorite at home, as the Cardinals have odds of -3 points against San Diego. The over/under total for the game has been set at 46.5 points (View Matchup). The opening odds for this game had Arizona favored by 3 points. The spread climbed to 3.5 during the week and hit a low of 2.5 points before settling at 3. The over/under total opened at 44.5 points and slowly climbed to 46.5 points.
The Cardinals had a great year in 2013, but just missed the playoffs. The team has high expectations for this season as they enter their second year under coach Bruce Arians. Carson Palmer threw for 4,274 yards and 24 touchdowns a year ago and Andre Ellington emerged as a solid running back, though he is doubtful to play tonight because of a foot injury. Defensively, the Cardinals were playmakers in 2013, picking up 47 sacks with 30 turnovers and four touchdowns.
San Diego seemed to figure something out last season. Philip Rivers had a great season in 2013, throwing for 4,478 yards and 32 touchdowns. He found a new top receiver in Keenan Allen, who caught 71 passes for 1,046 yards and eight scores. Malcom Floyd is back this season as well after missing most of last year with an injury. The defense wasn’t great, but could have been worse. The team is looking for a star to emerge on that side of the field this year.
In terms of Injuries, Arizona safety Tyrann Mathieu (knee) and linebacker Alex Okafor (thigh) are both questionable for this game. San Diego defensive back Jahleel Addae (hamstring) and tight end Antonio Gates (hamstring) are both questionable as well.
The Public Bets for this game are currently backing the Chargers, as San Diego is getting 61% of the wagers with odds of +3 points at Arizona tonight.
