ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -Michigan quarterback Chad Henne was replaced in the third quarter Saturday against Ohio State after he played ineffectively because of a shoulder injury, but returned early in the fourth.
When he left the game, Henne jogged from the Wolverines’ sideline, around the field and up the tunnel toward the locker room. He was 10-of-25 for 60 yards, missing many targets with high or wide throws.
Freshman Ryan Mallett took over with No. 23 Michigan trailing the seventh-ranked Buckeyes by 11 points late in the third quarter.
Michigan running back Mike Hart was healthy enough to start and stay in the game, but Ohio State could stack its defense to stop the run because it didn’t have to respect the pass as Henne struggled.
The Wolverines were expected to have the senior stars in the lineup against the Buckeyes, but coach Lloyd Carr declined to say if they would play and both players were not available for interviews this week.
Henne has been on and off the field since separating his right (throwing) shoulder Oct. 20 at Illinois. He started last week’s game at Wisconsin, but was sidelined early in the game.
Hart was held out against the Badgers and has missed 3 1/2 games with a sprained right ankle.
