CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina has opened preseason practice under interim coach Everett Withers, who took over after the school unexpectedly fired Butch Davis last week.
Withers spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He roamed the practice fields Friday keeping an eye on everything, including the offensive players that he typically hadn’t seen as much over the years.
Withers says the Tar Heels should be prepared for moving on without Davis after dealing with all the distractions last year amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct.
Defensive tackle Tydreke Powell says it feels a little different at practice without Withers yelling at just the defensive players, while quarterback Bryn Renner says Withers coaches with a lot of energy.
