PASADENA, Calif. (AP) – Wisconsin turned to its powerful running game when the game was on the line, marching down the field and into the end zone on the legs of John Clay and Montee Ball.
Needing two more points to tie, the Badgers went to the air and had their Rose Bowl hopes batted down.
Scott Tolzien’s pass got knocked down at the line of scrimmage, and No. 3 TCU held on to beat the fourth-ranked Badgers 21-19 on Saturday.
Wisconsin was the only team in the country with three running backs who gained at least 800 yards this season and the Badgers ran for 226 yards against the Horned Frogs.
But with a chance to tie the game with 2:00 left after Ball had run for a 4-yard score, Wisconsin lined up in the shotgun and Tolzien got set to throw against a TCU blitz.
TCU linebacker Tank Carder’s big right hand slammed the ball to the turf, taking down Wisconsin’s hopes of winning its fourth straight appearance in Pasadena.
