EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Eight months after an embarrassing loss in the Capital One Bowl, Michigan State is still hoping to earn a spot among the nation’s elite.
The 17th-ranked Spartans host Youngstown State of the Football Championship Subdivision on Friday night. Michigan State is coming off an impressive 11-win season in which it tied for the Big Ten title, but the Spartans lost to Alabama 49-7 in their bowl. Defensive lineman William Gholston says that defeat has been a motivator for Michigan State.
The Spartans and Penguins will play a rare Friday night game. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says the scheduling should be advantageous to fans, who can still enjoy a long Labor Day weekend after the game.
