MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Minnesota running back Kevin Whaley will transfer after being suspended from the program.
Coach Tim Brewster announced Wednesday that Whaley requested a release from his scholarship and will be permitted to transfer. Whaley was suspended for violating team rules and policies following the team’s loss in the Insight Bowl in Arizona on New Year’s Eve.
Whaley was the team’s second-leading rusher as a redshirt freshman, totaling 367 yards and two touchdowns. Sharing time in the backfield with Duane Bennett and DeLeon Eskridge, Whaley was the most productive of three with an average of 4.2 yards per carry.
Shortly after Whaley signed with the Gophers, he was shot in the leg outside a nightclub in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Va.
