CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -Former Marshall football coach Bob Pruett has denied allegations he was involved in an academic scandal and a jobs program for athletes that drew NCAA violations in 2001.
Pruett refuted the claims in a sworn deposition he gave in May in a lawsuit filed by David Ridpath, Marshall’s former NCAA compliance officer.
Earlier depositions by two players and a former strength coach implicated Pruett in the grades scandal involving a physical education class and a booster’s high-paying jobs program for freshman players.
Pruett denies those claims or any direct involvement in the 2003 firing of Ridpath.
Ridpath claims he was made a scapegoat after the Huntington university was placed on four years probation and was stripped of some football and basketball scholarships.
Pruett is now an assistant coach at Virginia.
