MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -LSU assistant coach Larry Porter, who’s built a reputation for being one of the nation’s best recruiters, was hired to rebuild Memphis on Sunday.
Porter replaces Tommy West, who was fired Nov. 9 after nine seasons. West coached the Tigers (2-10) the rest of the season, which ended with a 33-30 overtime loss at Tulsa on Friday.
Porter was a running back at Memphis from 1990-93, and had coaching stints at Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State before joining Les Miles at LSU. Porter has coached the Tigers’ running backs since 2005.
Porter has twice been named the nation’s best recruiter by Rivals.com.
