IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Jurors have gone home for the night without reaching a verdict in the sexual abuse trial of a former University of Iowa football player accused of having nonconsensual sex with a fellow student while she was passed out.
Jurors are expected to resume deliberations on Thursday. They deliberated for more than 7 hours Wednesday in the Johnson County courthouse.
Former Hawkeyes defensive back Cedric Everson faces third-degree sexual assault and other charges and could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors say in October 2007, Everson had sex with the woman while she was passed out in a dorm room. They say Everson’s teammate sexually assaulted the woman earlier that evening while she was awake.
Everson’s attorneys say the sex was consensual.
