LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead says he’s heard Nebraska-Oklahoma used to be a pretty big game.
To a younger generation of fans and players, this Saturday’s final Big 12 championship game simply decides which team gets to go to the Fiesta Bowl and maybe earn some bragging rights.
Older fans? Well, they are getting sentimental about one of the storied rivalries in college football.
In the days of the Big Eight, Nebraska-Oklahoma decided the conference championship in all but three seasons between 1970-88. Both programs have had down cycles since. Now they meet one more time, not on a cold afternoon in Lincoln or Norman but indoors at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Coach Bob Stoops says it’s fitting that the teams will play once more before Nebraska heads to the Big Ten next season.
