CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Miami’s football program has received a $4.2 million gift to fund scholarships, the largest donation ever made to the team and one that comes 35 years after it was promised.
The endowment was announced Thursday. It comes from the estate of department store heiress Mary B. Hecht, who died in 1982. University officials say the gift could not be made until the recent death of the income beneficiary of Hecht’s estate.
In a statement, Miami President Donna Shalala said Mary Hecht was a “passionate supporter” of the Hurricanes and “now her generous legacy will help future generations of student-athletes.”
Miami opens its season at Maryland on Monday night.
