RUSTON, La. (AP) -Louisiana Tech football coach Derek Dooley will add the role of athletic director to his duties.
The school announced the move Thursday. Dooley won’t formally take over until athletic director Jim Oakes steps down from the position at the end of June. The hiring of Dooley is pending the approval of the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors.
University President Dr. Dan Reneau said Dooley “has all the talents and all the abilities to lead us into the future of a new era.”
Reneau said Dooley’s ability as a fundraiser and his desire to improve Tech’s athletic facilities in all sports was a key factor in the decision.
During his first two months as football coach, Dooley raised more than $500,000 to renovate the football locker room and parts of the Charles Wyly Athletic Center and Joe Aillet Fieldhouse this past summer.
Last season, the Bulldogs went 5-7, including 4-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. They went 3-10 in 2006.
“I appreciate the confidence President Reneau and our administration have shown in me,” Dooley said. “We are embarking on an unprecedented strategic plan for Tech athletics, and I am excited about the opportunity to help elevate all of our programs within the department.”
