LOS ANGELES (AP) -Julius “Julie” Bescos, who lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Southern California and later coached at his alma mater, has died at 97.
Bescos died Saturday in suburban Long Beach, the school announced Tuesday. No cause was given.
He was inducted into the USC athletic Hall of Fame earlier this month, having earned eight letters in the three sports.
An end in football, Bescos was a member of the undefeated 1932 national championship team and captained the 1934 squad. As a basketball guard, he was the team’s MVP in 1934 and twice earned All-Pacific Coast Conference Southern Division honors.
Bescos played outfield on the baseball team, with USC winning the league title in 1932. He was also a skilled javelin thrower and golfer, but didn’t compete in those sports at USC.
After his playing career, he joined the USC coaching staff in 1935, working with the freshmen and junior varsity football, basketball and baseball squads. He assisted with varsity football from 1937-41 and in 1945. He was the men’s basketball coach in 1942, going 12-8 and finishing second in the league.
He later worked in sales with a local seafood canner. He ranked among the nation’s top amateur golfers and served as president of the California and Southern California Golf Association.
He is survived by his wife, Faye; son, Barry; daughters Julianne Gee and Vicki Payne; stepsons John, Steve and Joe Dallas; and numerous grandchildren.
