THIBODAUX, La. (AP) -Nicholls State had 447 yards offense and limited Southern Arkansas to 229 yards, and stayed ahead all the way to Saturday night’s 31-13 victory.
Dwayne Jones, who converted from fullback to middle linebacker in the spring, and Lance Moore each had 5.5 tackles to lead the defense for the Colonels (2-0).
Nicholls State took a 17-0 lead on a field goal by Alex Romero, who also made the extra points when Cal Jones ran 41 yards for one touchdown and Broderick Cole plunged 1 yard for another.
But Steven Ashley ran 52 yards for a touchdown and Josh SanFilippo capped an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring dive to pull the Muleriders (1-1) up to 17-13 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Joseph Tobias scored from 2 yards out and wide receiver Michael Okoronkwo caught a 42-yard pass from Zach Chauvin for the final touchdown.
