BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) – No. 11 Virginia Tech’s maligned defense looked stronger in the Hokies’ easy victory against Appalachian State to start the season.
A bigger test will come Saturday, when it matches up against East Carolina’s spread offense.
Coach Frank Beamer says he likes the way his first unit played against the Mountaineers, but the backups have work to do. Appalachian State managed just 293 yards in all, and had just 61 at halftime before the Hokies substituted freely with a big lead.
The Pirates averaged 37 points last season employing a spread offense and scored 37 in their opener. They throw the ball a lot, with 56 passes and 37 completions in their opener, but have struggled to stop teams. South Carolina beat ECU in the opener 56-37.
