M plans to announce former Hampton coach Joe Taylor as its new football coach at a news conference Monday.
M president James Ammons and new athletic director Bill Hayes will be at the conference, the school said in a release Sunday.
Taylor will replace Rubin Carter, who was fired after three seasons on Nov. 20 after a 3-8 season.
M earlier offered its coaching job to Grambling’s Rod Broadway and Georgia assistant John Eason.
Hampton, meanwhile, named Jerry Holmes on Saturday to succeed Taylor.
Taylor, a 1972 graduate of Western Illinois University, is a native of Washington, D.C., and had been head coach at Hampton for 16 seasons.
Taylor faces a tough challenge at a school with its accreditation under review and its third president in less than four years. He’ll also be playing his former team annually since both are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Former president Fred Gainous was fired in late 2004 eight months after pulling the plug on an effort to move football to the Division I-A ranks. Ammons replaced interim president Castell Bryant in July and has made a series of changes at the school, replacing Carter and basketball coach Mike Gillespie.
