DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -Taylor Gray kicked a 22-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter Saturday to break a tie and give North Carolina Central a 17-14 victory over North Greenville.
The Eagles (5-2) converted an interception by Derrick Ray late in the third quarter into a 14-play, 92-yard drive ending in Gray’s kick.
North Greenville (5-2) took the ensuing kickoff to the N.C. Central 23, but missed a field goal. After that, the Crusaders never crossed midfield again.
N.C. Central (5-2) spotted North Greenville a 7-0 edge on Rashad Cummings’ 1-yard run with 4:59 left in the first period. The Crusaders (1-6) missed the conversion kick.
N.C. Central rallied for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. Stadford Brown threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Corey Harris with 14:54 left before the half, and Tim Shankle ran 4 yards for a score with 1:45 left in the second quarter.
North Greenville tied the score at the end of a nine-play, 70-yard drive when Eric Moeller passed to Jarvis Garrett for a 9-yard score with 10:59 left in the third quarter, then got the 2-point conversion play.
A week after collecting 515 yards and 52 points in a 14-point loss to Presbyterian, the Crusaders gained 292 total offensive yards against the Eagles.
