ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -After urging their fans to wear black, the No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs did too for their crucial game against 18th-ranked Auburn on Saturday.
The Bulldogs warmed up in their usual red home jerseys, and even sent out their four captains for the coin toss in red. Then the entire team charged onto the field – wearing black jerseys trimmed in red.
The crowd of more than 92,000 – most in black – cheered wildly while the sound system boomed with the AC/DC’s classic rock anthem “Back in Black.”
On Tuesday, coach Mark Richt passed along a request from the seniors that all Georgia fans wear black to the game. That prompted speculation that the Bulldogs would switch to that color as well, a subject the coach spent all week dancing around.
While saying it would be impossible to order new jerseys on such short notice, he never denied that it was possible the Bulldogs already had their new attire.
After the coin toss, the four captains – Marcus Howard, Brandon Coutu, Fernando Velasco and Asher Allen – switched to black. Coutu simply had a black jersey on under his red, while the 318-pound Velasco had to change on the sideline.
While waiting to put on his black shirt, the senior danced on the sideline.
Georgia officials said it was the first time in the modern era the team had worn black jerseys. The Bulldogs have had black pants in the past, though they were wearing their normal gray for this game.
