DENTON, Texas (AP) -Jason Chery scored a record-tying five touchdowns for Louisiana-Lafayette, all in the first half, to lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 59-30 victory over North Texas Saturday night.
On a first-quarter reverse, the wide receiver outran the Mean Green defense for an 81-yard touchdown. Chery’s move followed Jeremy Knott’s 46-yard field goal, which gave UNT (0-6, 0-2 Sun Belt) a 3-0 lead, its first this season.
Chery caught touchdown passes of 17, 49 and 57 yards from Michael Desormeaux and returned a kickoff 97 yards after Knott’s second of three field goals.
Jim Barton (in 1968) and Brian Mitchell (1989) also had five-touchdown games for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
North Texas’ Casey Fitzgerald caught 14 catches for 231 yards and a touchdown and Cam Montgomery had 116 yards and a touchdown rushing. Giovanni Vizza passed for 361 yards and two scores.
