AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -Texas coach Mack Brown says he didn’t pull quarterback Garrett Gilbert after his fifth interception against Kansas State because he didn’t want to signal that he was giving up.
Gilbert’ third interception killed a scoring drive near the end of the first half, and his fourth on the second play of the third quarter set up a touchdown that put the Wildcats ahead 31-0. His fifth came on Texas’ next possession.
Brown says pulling Gilbert at that point would have crushed a quarterback he still thinks has a lot of potential. He said that, later in the game, he wanted Gilbert to finish a scoring drive in the 39-14 loss.
Freshman Case McCoy is Gilbert’s backup. He hasn’t played since the season opener.
