GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -The Atlantic Coast Conference championship game is headed to Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte for the next four years.
Tampa will play host to the game in 2008 and 2009, and it will move to Charlotte in 2010 and 2011, the ACC announced Wednesday.
Charlotte is playing host to the league’s men’s basketball tournament this season.
“Both Tampa Bay and Charlotte are tremendous destinations in terms of their football venue, community support and partnership with the Atlantic Coast Conference,” commissioner John Swofford said.
A panel of league athletic directors and faculty athletics representatives voted unanimously to move the games to the two cities, ending a process that began in June.
Tampa was picked to host the first two-year block at least partially because of a citywide convention in Charlotte in 2008 that limited the availability of hotel rooms and event areas. Each city requested to host the game in consecutive years.
The first three ACC title games were played in Jacksonville, Fla., but attendance declined each year. The game drew 72,749 in 2005, 62,850 in 2006 and 53,212 earlier this month.
