Western Michigan Broncos Game Notes
Western Michigan redshirt sophomore QB Kaleb Eleby completed 22-of-29 passes for 307 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a 22-21 loss to Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night. Throughout the night, Eleby (6’1/215) was slinging it. He hit Skyy Moore on a beautiful nine route for 74-yards to start the scoring in the second quarter. He did a good job staying patient and making plays when nothing was there all evening. Unfortunately, when the Eagles took the lead late in the fourth quarter, Eleby had one of his passes batted down at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by defensive lineman Michael Smith Jr with just 2:24 left. The Broncos wouldn’t see the ball again and lost the game by one. The 6-5 Broncos take on Northern Illinois next Tuesday.
Northern Illinois Huskies Game Notes
Northern Illinois junior QB Rocky Lombardi completed 17-of-27 passes for 197 yards in a 33-27 overtime victory over Buffalo this Wednesday. Lombardi (6’3/227) had put up some prodigious passing marks over the past few weeks, but the Huskies relied on the run game to bring home the win and secure the MAC West Division championship in the process. It’s an especially impressive feat considering NIU was winless during the pandemic shortened 2020 season. Northern Illinois absolutely mauled Buffalo on the ground, racking up 309 rushing yards at a 6.8 yards per play clip on the day. Though Lombardi lacked many highlight reel worthy plays, he steadily moved the ball down the field and helped NIU achieve 25 first downs while punting just twice. The MAC West champs wrap up their regular season against Western Michigan next Tuesday.
