Wake Forest vs. Purdue Betting Preview
Both teams arrive at 1-0 off comfortable openers. Wake Forest handled Akron 38-16 behind quarterback Gio Lopez, who completed 21 of 32 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns in his debut. Jake Dickert is in year two at Wake Forest after a debut season that produced nine wins and a Duke’s Mayo Bowl title. The Boilermakers carry a 20-game losing streak against Power Four opponents into this one. That streak is the biggest reason a visiting ACC team is favored on the road.
Personnel matters more than the records. Lopez is a genuine dual-threat who added 39 rushing yards on seven carries, and Purdue defensive coordinator Kevin Kane has flagged containing him as the week’s central problem. Wake Forest receiver Carlos Hernandez posted 165 yards and a touchdown in the first half against Akron before leaving with an injury, and his availability is the biggest open question on either roster. Purdue played its opener without left tackle Joey Tanona and still ran for 177 yards.
Purdue leads the series 4-1, but the schools have not met since September 13, 2003, when the Boilermakers won 16-10 in this same stadium. Treat it as trivia, not a trend.

Start with the line movement, the most useful signal on the board. This game opened with the Demon Deacons laying 4.5 and the moneyline at -200. It now sits at -3 with the moneyline shortened to -160. That is a meaningful walk in one direction, and it happened while the spread splits stayed essentially even at 53% to 47%. When tickets are balanced and the number still moves, the move is coming from somewhere other than the ticket count.
The case for Purdue is price and place. Three points at home means the Boilermakers cash on any outright win and on a field-goal loss, and three is exactly where a home underdog wants to sit. Browne completed 79.3% of his throws in the opener and 11 different receivers caught a pass. Fame Ijeboi averaged 7.9 yards per carry.
The case against is the Boilers is the streak and the secondary. Twenty straight losses to Power Four teams is not a fluke, and Purdue’s back end gave up three pass plays of 40 or more yards to an FCS opponent, the most any Big Ten team allowed in week one. Wake Forest scored three of its four touchdowns on throws of 27, 72 and 78 yards. If that repeats, the number will not matter. Still, with the market drifting toward the home side all week, we would rather take the points.

The total opened at 50 and has not moved a half point, which is unusual for a game whose side traveled this far. Both openers cleared it: Purdue and Indiana State combined for 63 points, Wake Forest and Akron for 54. Both quarterbacks completed better than 65% of their throws.
The argument for the over is the mismatch between Wake Forest’s explosive passing game and a Purdue secondary that can be beaten over the top. Add a mobile quarterback who extends plays and a Purdue offense that went 6-for-6 in the red zone, and the path to the low 50s is short. The counterweight is real. Wake Forest committed 96 penalties for 903 yards last season and stalled in the red zone repeatedly, while Purdue was issued nine flags for 85 yards in its opener.
