Troy Trojans Game Notes
Troy sophomore QB Gunnar Watson completed 22-of-29 passes for 182 yards one touchdown and no interceptions in Saturday’s 31-28 win over Texas State. Watson (6’3/214) connected with wide receiver Tez Johnson for his first and only touchdown pass of the day, after he found Johnson for a 33-yard score early in the second quarter. Saturday’s game against Texas State was only Watson’s second start on the season, as he has now completed 46 passes for 452 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Now at 4-3 on the season, Troy will head to Coastal Carolina next week for a Thursday night tilt.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Game Notes
Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore QB Grayson McCall completed 15-of-23 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown in a 30-27 loss to Appalachian State on Wednesday. McCall (6’3/210) started out hot, leading the Chanticleers on a pair of first quarter touchdown drives to give CCU a 14-0 lead on a 74-yard strike to Kameron Brown while deftly avoiding the ASU rush. However the offense largely stalled from that point forward, closing out the first half with two field goals in which the offense gained a total of 19 yards, benefitting from a turnover on downs and a fumble recovery to put them in field goal range. Appalachian State’s pass rush was relentless in the second half, harassing McCall throughout the second half. Though CCU converted their first three, third down opportunities, they went 0-for-6 for the remainder of the contest, snuffing out multiple potentially profitable drives. Their run game didn’t help keep the ASU defense off balance either, gaining just 55 yards on 29 carries for a morose 1.9 yards per carry average. CCU will try to get back on the winning track next Thursday against Troy.
