UTSA gets winning record in 2017
Texas-San Antonio is coming off a 6-5 record in 2017 and enters its third year under coach Frank Wilson. The Roadrunners were just 3-8 against the spread last season and 8-3 with the under.
UTSA scored only 259 points last season, but the Roadrunners were amazing on defense and allowed just 187 points in 11 games. UTSA has a new starting QB in JUCO transfer Cordale Grundy. He takes over an offense that desperately needs to improve. While UTSA returns its leading rusher in Jalen Rhodes, he had just 659 yards and five scores.
ASU under new direction
Arizona State is coming off a 7-6 record in 2017, which resulted in Todd Graham being fired. ASU then made an interesting hire, choosing former NFL coach Herm Edwards, who has never been a head coach in college and has been away from coaching since 2008. Last season, ASU was 7-6 against the spread. The Sun Devils were 7-6 with the under as well.
ASU struggled a great deal on defense last year, allowing 427 points despite posting 414 points on offense. Edwards has a veteran QB to build with in Manny Wilkins. He threw for 3,270 yards and 20 touchdowns last year and had eight interceptions. They also return their top receiver in N’Keal Harry, who caught 82 passes for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. The key will be for ASU to find some new backs as they lose their top two rushers from 2017.
College Football Betting Trends
UTSA
UTSA has hit the under in its last seven games overall and in their last four road games.
Arizona State
Arizona State has hit the over in five of its last six games overall.
Prediction:
I don’t see either offense being able to really light things up. I would expect ASU to have some struggles under the new coaching staff and UTSA hasn’t had an offense in well over a year. I think the Roadrunners will create problems with their defense and the ASU defense should look better against a poor offense. Look for this game to be a bit ugly and low scoring.
College Football Prediction: UTSA/Arizona State Under 53.5
