Iowa beats up Miami (Ohio)
Iowa earned a 38-14 win over Miami (Ohio) last weekend to open the season. The Hawkeyes failed to cover a 25-point spread while going over the 48-point total. The Hawkeyes are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven.
The Hawkeyes had 465 yards of offense in the win last weekend, while holding Miami to just 245 total yards. Iowa had a 213-59 edge in rushing yards. Nate Stanley threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns in the victory while Mekhi Sargent led the ground attack with 91 yards and a score on 14 carries. He also led the team in receiving with four catches for 65 yards.
Rutgers puts up the points
The Rutgers football team put an end to a lengthy losing streak thanks to a 48-21 win over UMass on Friday. The Knights were a 17-point favorite and ended up covering for the sixth straight game, dating back to last season. Rutgers went over the 54-point total as well.
Rutgers had an offensive outburst in the Week 1 victory. The Knights had 554 total yards in the victory while holding UMass to just 304 total yards. McLane Carter threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, but also had three interceptions. Isaih Pacheco led the offense with 156 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. The Knights also had two 100-yard receivers in the victory. Defensively, Rutgers did give up 183 rushing yards to UMass, which could be a concern this week.
College Football Betting Trends
Iowa
The Hawkeyes are just 1-4 against the spread in their last five conference games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a win of more than 20 points.
Rutgers
The Knights have covered the spread in six of their last seven following a win and in five straight Big Ten games.
Prediction:
Normally I wouldn’t feel good about Iowa having to cover so many points in a conference game, as the Hawkeyes aren’t usually one for lighting up a scoreboard. However, Rutgers really struggled to stop the UMass ground attack, which tells me it will struggle stopping the Iowa rushing game, especially on the road. The Hawkeyes will then be able to work in play-action passing and break a few big plays. Rutgers had a nice offensive showing last week, but the Knights are likely to return to form on the road against this strong Iowa defense.
College Football Week 2 Prediction: Iowa -19.5
