Purdue Boilermakers Game Notes
Purdue redshirt senior QB Aiden O’Connell completed 40-of-54 passes for 536 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-29 upset of Michigan State on Saturday. O’Connell (6’3/200) could not be stopped against the Spartans, as the redshirt senior signal caller set new career marks for completions and passing yardage. The Boilermakers were trendy upset picks this week and they showed why, converting 11-of-18 third downs while O’Connell averaged a crisp 9.9 yards per pass attempt. While he was superb all game long, his best play came on the initial score of the evening when he was heavily pressured and almost got sacked before breaking out of a pile to climb the pocket and deliver a five-yard touchdown strike to David Bell. With the game on the line and Purdue up one score, he led a 10-play, 76-yard field goal drive with just :41 remaining in the game to seal the victory. It was truly a signature win for O’Connell who will lead the 6-3 Boilermakers against Ohio State next Saturday.
Ohio State Buckeyes Game Notes
Ohio State freshman QB CJ Stroud completed 36-of-54 passes for 405 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 26-17 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. With Garrett Wilson missing the contest, Stroud (6’3/190) was locked onto Jaxon Smith-Njigba as 18 of his passes went to the dynamic slot receiver, including a his game long 75-yard strike. While he played well overall, the Nebraska defensive front was able to harass him into throwing two interceptions and multiple errant throws. Stroud didn’t get much help from the OSU run game either, as they posted just 90 yards on 3.0 yards per carry on the day. The Buckeyes will have to avoid stalling out in the red zone for four field goals in the future, as they face Purdue, Michigan State and Michigan down the stretch.
