Irish take a week off
Notre Dame opened its season on Sept. 2 with a 35-17 win at Louisville. The Fighting Irish were a 19-point favorite, so they failed to cover the spread while going under the total. ND has hit the under in four straight games, dating back to last season.
ND got a scare early from Louisville, as the Cardinals put up some solid offense in the first quarter. However, the Fighting Irish settled in from there and dominated the final three quarters. ND finished with 423 yards of offense while holding Louisville to 383 total yards and forcing three turnovers. Quarterback Ian Book threw for 193 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 81 yards and a score to lead the Irish. Tony Jones Jr. added 110 rushing yards and a touchdown for Notre Dame, while Alohi Gilman had 10 tackles and recovered a fumble.
New Mexico playing without Davie
New Mexico also hasn’t played in over a week, as the Lobos opened their season on Aug. 31 and earned a 39-31 victory at home over Sam Houston State. The Lobos covered a 6-point spread in the win while going over the 63.5-point total.
The Lobos saw their coach, former ND head coach Bob Davie, have to rush to the hospital after their win in the opener. A “serious medical incident” will keep Davie from coaching the team this weekend as well. New Mexico put up 485 yards of offense in the opener, but gave up 558 total yards to Sam Houston State. Brandt Hughes had thrown for 218 yards on 12 of 29 passing before going down with a shoulder injury that has him out for today’s game. Sheriron Jones filled in and threw for 122 yards while rushing for 35 and two scores. Jones gets the start today. Ahmari Davis was the leading rusher with 107 yards and two touchdowns while Johnny Hernandez led the defense with 11 tackles.
College Football Betting Trends
Notre Dame
The Irish have covered the spread in four straight against Mountain West opponents and in 10 of their last 14 games following a week off.
New Mexico
The Lobos are just 1-5 against the spread in their last six games following a cover and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a win.
Prediction:
This is a big spread for ND to cover, but the Irish come in rested and with some momentum after pulling away from Louisville after a slow start in the opener. New Mexico is without its coach and its starting quarterback. That is likely to lead to some execution problems when going on the road to face ND in its home opener. The Irish should dominate on defense and I think Book can lead the offense to enough points to cover this spread.
College Football Week 3 Prediction: Notre Dame -35
