Oregon on a win streak
Oregon suffered a tough 27-21 loss to Auburn to open the season, but the Ducks have won three straight since then. That includes a 21-6 win at Stanford two weeks ago in their last game. The Ducks are 3-1 overall, 1-0 in the Pac-12, 2-2 against the spread and 3-1 with the under.
Surprisingly, Oregon has one of the best defenses in the country thus far. The Ducks are giving up just 10.5 points and 262.8 yards per game. That puts them in the top 10 nationally in both categories. Offensively, Oregon is averaging 458.8 yards and 38.5 points per contest. Justin Herbert has thrown for 1,127 yards and 14 touchdowns with no interceptions to lead the offense this year. He has spread the ball out well, but Jacob Breeland is his leading receiver with 18 catches for 265 yards and five touchdowns. CJ Verdell is the leading rusher with 231 yards and two touchdowns. Jevon Holland is leading the defense with 21 tackles and two interceptions.
Bears suffer first loss
California was off to a 4-0 start to the season, but suffered a 24-17 loss at home to Arizona State last weekend. The Bears are now 4-1 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-12, 2-3 against the spread and 4-1 with the under.
The Pac-12 is usually known for offense, but Cal is relying on its defense to win this year. The Bears are giving up just 18.6 points and 366.2 yards per game. Offensively, Cal is only averaging 23 points and 346 yards per contest. Chase Garbers has thrown for 952 yards and eight touchdowns this year, but he suffered a shoulder injury last week that has him out indefinitely. Devon Modster has to take over the offense. He has just 15 pass attempts this season. Christopher Brown Jr. is the team’s leading rusher with 389 yards and three touchdowns, while Nikko Remigio has 12 catches for 188 yards and a TD. The defense is being led by linebacker Evan Weaver, who already has 77 tackles this season.
College Football Betting Trends
Oregon
The Ducks are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games following a bye week, but just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games in October.
California
The Bears are 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight conference games.
Prediction:
Oregon has covered in seven of its last eight meetings with California, but I think the Ducks are giving up too many points today. Cal is coming off a loss and the Buffaloes have a pretty rough offense, but the Golden Bears have a really strong defense. California has had its last four games all decided by eight points or less. Oregon is a good team, but the Ducks offense hasn’t been able to consistently put up big points. I think they will have trouble with this Cal defense, allowing the Bears to cover.
