Buffalo Bulls
Buffalo redshirt senior WR Anthony Johnson caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown in Tuesday’s 48-14 win over Kent State. The Bulls were rolling to absurd degree on the ground and did not need major contributions from their aerial attack — Tyree Jackson attempted just 16 passes — but Johnson managed to find the end zone regardless, hitting pay dirt from three yards out early on in the third quarter. On the whole this season, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound redshirt senior owns a 35-699-9 receiving line in eight games. Johnson and crew will close up shop on the regular season with games against Ohio and Bowling Green.
Ohio Bobcats
Ohio junior QB Nathan Rourke completed 16-of-27 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns in Wednesday’s 30-28 loss to Miami (OH). The Bobcats trailed 28-7 at the half before their offense began to show signs of life over the final two quarters of play. Rourke connected on a nine-yard touchdown pass to Papi White near the end of the third quarter to get their comeback bid started. Following a fourth-quarter blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Ohio (and a safety by the Redhawks), the junior signal-caller hooked up with Andrew Meyer on an 18-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 30-28. They would get the ball back one more time, but did nothing serious with their final opportunity of the game. Rourke and crew will tango with Buffalo and Akron to close out the regular-season campaign.
Betting Trends
Buffalo
The Bulls are 9-1 against the spread in their last 10 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
Ohio
The Bobcats are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight home games and are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games versus a team with a winning record.
Prediction
The Bulls are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games versus the Bobcats and feature a tremendous QB-WR duo in Johnson and signal-caller Tyree Jackson. Ohio needs this game to be ugly, as the Bobcats’ strength is their running game, which ranks 19th in the nation in rushing yards per game. But Ohio’s weakness defensively is its pass defense, which is allowing 269 yards per game, ranking 112th in the nation. While a 9-1 team catching points on the road scares me a little, this Buffalo team is too good to fade.
