Southern Miss
Southern Miss redshirt sophomore WR Quez Watkins caught five passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 40-22 win over Rice. Watkins (6’2/190) flash-fried the Owls with a 28-yard touchdown grab midway through the first quarter. After setting the tone of the campaign via an 8-138-3 performance against Jackson State in the opener, Watkins has fallen back to earth by degrees, but not completely. He’s still topped 80 yards receiving in each of the preceding contests and has scored at least one touchdown in each of his three games to date. All told this season, the redshirt sophomore has hauled in 24 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns to this juncture. Tougher sledding coming against Auburn next weekend, presumably.
Auburn Tigers
Auburn redshirt freshman RB JaTarvious Whitlow rushed for 49 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries in Saturday’s 34-3 win over Arkansas. Whitlow (6’0/216) was making his first start of the season in this one, earning the nod on the strength of back-to-back 100-yard performances over his previous two games. He didn’t hit the century mark versus the Razorbacks, but did notch touchdowns of five and 15 yards in the first and fourth quarters (respectively) of Saturday’s victory. Whitlow and friends will play host to Southern Miss next weekend.

Prediction
If Auburn gets better play out of its offensive line today and everything comes together on that side of the ball for the first time all year, then the Tigers should roll. In fact, this line is a little lower than it should be because Auburn continues to develop some rhythm up front. I think the Tigers will use today to make some tweaks to their short passing game and get rolling. It’s time that Auburn puts together a complete effort and with the Tigers playing at home, I like for them to do it today.
