Texas Season Odds

AUSTIN, TX (The Spread) – The Texas Longhorns have had a pair of disappointing years by their standards coming into the 2012 College Football Season. Can they turn it around this year?

The Longhorns went 8-5 last year and 5-7 in 2010. Mack Brown enters his 15th season with Texas this year and people are starting to wonder if he can still lead Texas to championships. This year, Brown has 15 starters back and Texas’ sights are set on winning championships again.

According to oddsmakers, the Longhorns have 4/1 odds to win the 2012 Big 12 Championship and 15/1 odds to win the 2013 BCS National Championship. Texas’ over/under win total has been set at 9 wins for this year.

The Texas offense has nine starters back from last year, led by sophomore quarterback David Ash and sophomore running back Malcolm Brown. Ash seemed to lock in the starting job from teammate Case McCoy, whom he split time with last year. Brown rushed for 742 yards and five touchdowns last season, but is expected to make a big step up this year. Brown actually has 85/1 odds to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy. Ash will also have his top four receivers back from last year as well as four starters back on the offensive line.

Defensively, Texas has six starters back from a unit that allowed 22.2 points and 306 yards per game last year. The Longhorns should be strong in their secondary, as they return three of the four starters, including Carrington Byndom and Quandre Diggs, who combined for 30 pass deflections last year. Texas also has defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat back. He led the defense with eight sacks in 2011.

When looking at the schedule, Texas has a light non-conference setup, with the toughest game being at Ole Miss. The Longhorns will host Baylor, West Virginia, and TCU in Big 12 play while heading to Oklahoma State. They also face Oklahoma in Dallas in the annual rivalry game. The schedule sets up nice for Texas to win 10 games this year if their young talent can show improvement from a year ago.
