Alabama Shuts Out LSU, Covers Easily
NEW ORLEANS, LA (The Spread) – In what largely turned out to be another field goal-fest, Alabama shut down LSU 21-0 in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game on Monday.
The Crimson Tide took a 3-0 lead with 5:00 minutes remaining in the first quarter when Jeremy Shelley hit a 23-yard field goal. Shelley then came back in the second quarter and hit field goals of 34 yards and 41 yards, respectively, as ‘Bama went into halftime up 9-0.
Then things really got interesting. Shelley hit field goals from 35 and 44 yards out in the third quarter to extend Alabama’s lead to 12-0. With 4:36 remaining in the game, Tide running back Trent Richardson scored on a 34-yard touchdown run to ice the contest and give ‘Bama a 21-0 victory.

That was it. That was your 2012 BCS National Championship recap. The previously unbeaten Tigers managed just five first downs in one of the most dominating defensive performances you’ll ever see. All LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson could muster was 53 yards on 11-of-17 passing with one interception, while Jenny Hilliard was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 16 yards on five carries.
Alabama was a 2.5-point favorite at kickoff, so they obviously covered easily even though it was only a two-possession game heading into the fourth. And just like in the previous contest, the under hit as the combined score of 21 fell well short of the over 41.
When the odds for the 2012 title game opened back in January of last year, Alabama had 15/2 odds to win while LSU was 12/1. The Oklahoma Sooners, who failed to qualify for a BCS bowl this season, opened as a 7/2 favorite.
