2011 Conference USA East Odds To Win: Southern Mississippi Favored

(The Spread) – The 2011 Conference USA East Division should be a competitive group, but one team has a slight edge to win the division over the rest.

According to oddsmakers from Bodog, Southern Mississippi is the favorite with odds of 5/4. Other short odds to win are Central Florida (7/4) and Alabama Birmingham (7/2).

Southern Miss last won this division in 2006. The Golden Eagles went 8-5 last season and 5-3 in the conference. This season, Larry Fedora returns for his fourth season as head coach and returns 16 starters, including quarterback Austin Davis, who threw for 3,103 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Central Florida has won this division three times, including last season. The Knights were 11-3 overall in 2010 and 8-1 in the conference. George O’Leary is in his eighth season as head coach and he brings back 11 starters this season. UCF brings back its top seven rushers back from last season from a group that averaged 188 yards per game on the ground.

UAB has never won the division title in six years of its existence. The Blazers were 4-8 last season and 3-5 in conference play. UAB is in its fifth year with coach Neil Callaway, who is just 15-33 with the Blazers. UAB has 17 starters back this season, including quarterback Bryan Ellis, who threw for 2,940 yards and 25 touchdowns.
