LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) -Reggie Williams had 43 points and 10 rebounds and VMI took advantage of fouls to beat Apprentice 112-96 Monday night.
Chavis Holmes had 30 points, including 10 from the free-throw line. He scored his 1,000th point in the first half. Travis Holmes added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Keydets (5-5).
Three Apprentice players fouled out, as the Builders committed 27 fouls that led to 29 points for VMI. Every Apprentice player had at least one foul.
Nolan Thompson led Apprentice (6-5) with 21 points, all of which were scored in the first half. Eric Ruffin added 17, Jason Arrington 16 and Antoine Page 10.
Fred Spratley pulled down 13 rebounds. Apprentice outrebounded VMI 42-35, and dominated in second-chance points 22-3.
Ruffin’s 3-pointer tied it at 23 apiece with 11:02 to play in the first half. Willie Bell hit one of two free throws, then Thompson scored seven straight. Apprentice kept the lead until Williams’ dunk with 2:43 before the break put VMI up 54-53. The Keydets led 58-57 at halftime.
VMI kept a single-digit lead in the second half until Williams’ layup with 6:26 to play put VMI up 89-78. Apprentice got to within six with 4:43 remaining, but could get no closer.
