CLEVELAND (AP) – Villanova had its second straight miserable finish to end a regular season, a five-game losing streak that made the Wildcats a No. 9 seed in the East.
But the Wildcats (21-11) hope a little March magic can rub off on them. Former coach Rollie Massimino was a guest after practice on Thursday. He led the Wildcats to their only national championship in 1985.
Of course, Villanova isn’t the only team that knows about improbable runs to the Final Four. George Mason (26-6) made the field this year as an at-large team for the first time since it reached the Final Four in 2006.
Coach Jim Larranaga says he never tires of talking about that team. He wants the eighth-seeded Patriots to believe they can duplicate that feat.
