RICHMOND (AP) – Thousands of fans on VCU’s Richmond campus stood and cheered as the final seconds ticked away on the team’s remarkable run to the Final Four.
Despite Virginia Commonwealth’s 70-62 loss Saturday night to Butler, fans cheered and chanted, “VCU! VCU!” as they poured out of the Siegel Center at the edge of downtown Richmond.
The streets outside the athletic center had a heavy police presence, and fans were initially well-behaved, posing with officers for photos. Later, the scene got rowdier as fans gathered in Broad Street, some setting off fireworks and tossing trash cans as students looked down from apartment windows and rooftops.
As police helicopters hovered overhead, officers in cruisers sought to move the crowd to a city park several blocks away for a planned celebration of the season.
