HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Connecticut Athletic Director Warde Manuel says the school is looking for a sponsor to secure naming rights for its planned basketball training center, rejecting speculation that the building would be named after recently retired coach Jim Calhoun.
UConn said this week it has raised about $22 million of the $32 million needed to break ground on the center, which is expected to cost over $40 million.
The facility, which would include separate practice courts for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, would be built adjacent to Gampel Pavilion on the site where the former football stadium was razed earlier this year.
Calhoun, who retired last month, is raising money for the center. He said he will be visiting NBA training camps this fall and plans to ask former UConn players for their help.
